Jimmy L. Derry

July 26th, 1935 – February 6th, 2016

Jim Derry, 80, of Astoria, passed away at 4:50 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at his home. He was born on July 26, 1935 in Vermont, the son of Floyd “Buck” and Ila (English) Derry. Jim married Linda Price on October 23, 1954 in Astoria, IL. She survives.

Also surviving are his 2 sons, Jimmy (and Debbie) Derry of Summum, IL and Joey Derry of Ocala, FL, 3 daughters, Tonya (and Tom) Stell of Astoria, Tammy (and Billy) Tanner of Bloomington and Tina (and Brad) Batterton of Astoria, 11 grandchildren, Jordyn (and Whitney) Davis, Kizzie (and Norm) Gorsuch, Keesha Stell, Bocephus (and Madison Bucher) Stell, Jimmy Tanner, Koty (and Rosie) Tanner, Kasey Tanner, Kloey Tanner, Kolby (and Katie) Batterton, Klay (and Bobbi) Batterton and Kortlyn (and Matt Fletcher) Batterton, 17 great-grandchildren, Paisley, Pyper, Briar, Tommi Jo, Sophia, Ariel, Jagger, Carter, Cash, Coltyn, Jaxson, Landon, Cali, Kenleigh, Kredon, Drew and Boston, and 2 sister, Joan (and Jack) Poppenhager of Canton and Diana Phillips of Coal Valley.

He is preceded in death by sister, Donna Graham.

Jim was the owner and operator of Derry Motors and Derry Truck Line in Astoria. He went on to work at Caterpillar District 121 for 10 years. He was also a coal miner for 20 years for the AMAX Coal Co at Sun Spot Mine and 10 years at the Wabash Underground Mine in Mt. Carmel. He then worked construction for Operating Engineers Local 649 for 9 years.

He was a member of United Mine Workers of America and Operating Engineers Local 649. He was a 50 year member of the Astoria and Vermont Masonic Lodge and the Ipava Order of the Eastern Star where he was a Past Master. His hobby was owning and training quarter horses. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Pastor Gary Sheets will be officiating. A visitation will take place from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the funeral home with masonic services at 8 pm, conducted by the Vermont Masonic Lodge. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Astoria. Memorials may be made to the Astoria Rescue Squad.
