Mary Edith Beam

September 23rd, 1920 – March 3rd, 2016

Mary Edith Beam, age 95 of Smithfield, IL, passed away at 11:10 am on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Red Oaks Estate in Canton, IL. She was born on September 23, 1920 in Woodland Township, Fulton County, IL, the daughter of Hiram and Nellie (Shawgo) Beatty. On February 16, 1939, Mary Edith married Lundry Beam in St. Louis, MO. He preceded her in death on September 6, 1996.

She was also preceded in death by 3 grandchildren, Lori Fulton, Matthew Howard, and Aaron Beam, and her sister Midra Markley.

Mary Edith is survived by 2 sons, Larry (and Celia) Beam and Terry (and Sherry) Beam, both of Cuba, IL, her daughter Linda (and Eldon) Howard of Ipava, IL, 7 grandchildren; Chad (and Elizabeth) Beam, Jason Cole Beam, Carrie Jo Beam, Brian (and Aimee) Beam, Bradley (and Sarah) Beam, Kelli (and Mark) O'Hara, and Rodney Howard, 17 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers, Charlie Beatty of East Peoria, IL and Carroll (and Mary Ellen) Beatty of Cuba, IL.

She was the clerk and postmistress for Smithfield for 36 years, retiring in 1985.

Mary Edith was a member of the Smithfield Church of the Nazarene, the Fulton County Home Extension, the Neighborly Circle in Smithfield, and the National League of Postmasters.

She was a die hard Cubs fan.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016 at her church. Pastor Dean Potts will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be made to her church or Red Oaks Estate. Interment will be in the Baughman Cemetery.

Mary was one of the sweetest and kindest ladies I have had the privilege of knowing. I pray you will sense God's peace and find comfort in your beautiful memories of Mary.

I got to know Mary these last two years and she was always gracious and kind. She always apologized for not remembering but often remembered quite well. I enjoyed listening to her tell about her days as postmistress and the people named on her "Memory Quilt"

To Mary's family we can only say you were blessed to know her as Mother, Grandmother, & Sister and we were blessed to know her as Neighbor & Friend! She was one of those kind & loving people who had the ability to make everyone feel loved & special.
